MIT in China

The following organizations representing MIT in China will be showcased during the afternoon of the flagship conference on Tuesday November 13.

The MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative mobilizes the substantial scientific, engineering, policy, and design capacity of MIT to create solutions to today’s environmental challenges through diverse activities in education, research, and convening. In the U.S., China and beyond, ESI aims to expand and accelerate progress toward environmental solutions in three vital domains: Climate Science and Earth Systems; Cities and Infrastructure; and Sustainable Production and Consumption.

The MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) is MIT’s pioneering international education program. The MISTI MIT-China Program combines student coursework on China and the Chinese language with hands-on applications in industry, research, and education. More than 100 MIT students participate in the MISTI-China program each year. In addition to company internships, students teach at Chinese universities and high schools through the MIT-China Educational Technology Initiative (CETI); conduct research at Chinese universities through the Fung Scholars program; and participate in product prototyping and fintech workshops in Hong Kong and Shenzhen with the MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node. MISTI-China activities also extend to faculty. The MIT Greater China Fund for Innovation promotes and supports early stage collaborations between MIT faculty and their counterparts in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan through the MISTI Global Seed Funds program.

MIT-CHIEF is a not-for-profit student organization registered at MIT. MIT-CHIEF are committed to promoting intellectual exchanges and collaborations between China and the United States in technology, innovation and entrepreneurship. As one of the largest entrepreneur communities on the East Coast, they strive to connect the most valuable US-based startups with leading investors, strategic partners and market access in China.

The China Future City Lab was initiated by Professor Siqi Zheng in November in 2017. The lab addresses challenges and issues related to the urbanization in China via innovation and research. We mobilize the vision, research expertise, experience, talent, creativity, and other resources of MIT to identify innovative concepts and develop novel tools, technologies and solutions that are applicable to the obstacles and opportunities seen in China’s growing cities.

MIT Corporate Relations aids and directs companies interested in multidisciplinary involvement with the Institute. It offers industry access to MIT through two integrated programs, the MIT Industrial Liaison Program (ILP) and MIT Startup Exchange. The Industrial Liaison Program is instrumental in providing connections to MIT faculty, departments, labs, and centers. It serves companies across the globe and is organized both geographically and by industry. MIT Startup Exchange actively promotes collaboration and partnerships between MIT-connected startups and industry. Qualified startups are those founded and/or led by MIT faculty, staff, or alumni, or are based on MIT-licensed technology. Industry participants are principally members of MIT’s Industrial Liaison Program (ILP).

The MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) links science, innovation, and policy to transform the world’s energy systems. As the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s hub for energy research, education, and outreach, MITEI is developing groundbreaking technologies that are vital components of the transition to a low-carbon energy future. Our mission is to create low- and no-carbon solutions that will efficiently and sustainably meet global energy needs while minimizing environmental impacts, dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and mitigating climate change. To advance this mission and accelerate commercialization of new low-carbon technologies, MITEI brings together researchers from across the Institute and facilitates collaborations with industry and government.

The creation of the MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node was announced in November 2015, where MIT President L. Rafael Reif described his vision of adding innovation to the traditional roles of teaching and research in the education of our students. Its focus is on cultivating the innovation capabilities of MIT and Hong Kong students, increasing opportunities and accelerating the path from idea to impact – working together with alumni, affiliates and friends in the community to help galvanize the region’s innovation ecosystem. The MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node is deepening MIT’s links to Hong Kong, Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area by fostering and championing innovation in academic, commercial and social communities, through the Node’s efforts in the region.

The MIT Leaders for Global Operations program, now in its 30th year, is a partnership of the MIT Sloan School of Management, the MIT School of Engineering, and major companies who support the program’s commitment to excellence in manufacturing and operations. The two-year dual-degree program offers an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management and an SM from the MIT School of Engineering. Since 2005 LGO has collaborated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University to support the China LGO program, China’s only dual-degree graduate program focused on operations. LGO leverages its partnerships with industry and academia to deepen its students’ understanding of operations in Greater China, and to contribute to innovations in operations/manufacturing research and education.

MIT New Media Action Lab (NMAL) is devoted to carrying out projects in developing countries that seek solutions provided by new media and information technology to alleviate the symptoms of the digital divide. NGO2.0 is a signature program of NMAL founded in 2009 in collaboration with the University of Science and Technology of China. Formally registered in Shenzhen, NGO2.0 provides digital and social media literacy training and Design Thinking methods for Chinese NGOs, enabling them to solve the problems they are tackling. NGO2.0 also built a crowdsourced philanthropy map and holds regular civic hackathons that link techies with NGOs to create solutions to social challenges. NGO2.0 collaborates with universities, corporations, and software developer and maker communities to help create a balanced and diverse ecosystem of China’s nonprofit sector.

The mission of MIT Open Learning is to transform teaching and learning at MIT and around the globe. Our learning portfolio includes over 2000 courses on OpenCourseWare, more than 100 MITx MOOCs, and four MITx MicroMasters programs. In addition, we develop custom, skill-building courses for professional development through MIT xPRO, intensive in-person Bootcamps training programs, and an upcoming Leadership Academy for Scientists, Engineers, and Researchers (LASER).

MIT Professional Education is the arm of MIT that provides working professionals worldwide a gateway to renowned MIT research and knowledge via education programs designed for them. Taught by faculty from across MIT, the programs aim to equip industry professionals with innovative practical expertise to help address today’s complex technical challenges and needs. MIT Professional Education has already conducted several successful programs for engineers, entrepreneurs, and executives in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Taipei, with plans to launch more programs, addressing a diverse set of topics, in key cities across China.

China Lab offers the opportunity to develop a deep understanding of the current state of China’s macro-economy and institutions, as well as country business dynamics. Students experience this through classroom lectures and a project solving a management challenge for a Chinese enterprise. A unique element of China Lab is that most projects have teams paired with iMBA students from leading business schools in China. These joint teams experience the real-world demands of virtual teamwork, working cross-culturally and across time zones to deliver answers for the sponsor organization. MIT students work for two weeks in China; iMBA students work for a week at MIT. Sponsor organizations in China include growth-stage startups, SMEs, Multinationals and Social Enterprises – most in technology industries.

MIT Sloan Global Programs (GP) seeks to establish high-level collaborations with leading institutions around the world to advance research and management education. GP works with multi-stakeholder initiatives to create economic and social impact by implementing new educational models that serve as important benchmarks for key regions worldwide. A core program of GP is the MIT Regional Entrepreneurship Acceleration Program (REAP), which provides opportunities for communities to engage with MIT in an evidence-based, practical approach to strengthen innovation-driven entrepreneurial (IDE) ecosystems. This is achieved by translating research insights into practical frameworks, convening stakeholders, and educating regional leaders through team-based interaction.

Ningbo Supply Chain Innovation Institute China

On 27th January 2016, the government of Ningbo, China, signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to jointly establish the Ningbo Supply Chain Innovation Institute China (NSCIIC), an exclusive education and research center in China focus on logistics and supply chain management. The mission of NSCIIC is to become an international center of excellence for research and education in logistics and supply chain management after a decade’s effort. Ningbo Supply Chain Innovation Institute China is a non-profit independent educational and research institution that is a full-standing member of the MIT Global Supply Chain and Logistics Excellence (SCALE) Network. In addition to the NSCIIC, the SCALE Network has four centers outside the United States in Colombia, Spain, Luxembourg and Malaysia.
